Tourists trying to check out of T.O. on Saturday were subject to lengthy waits for taxis, whose drivers had to show photo ID at police checkpoints on Front St. W., to get to the Royal York Hotel, CN Tower and Metro Convention Centre.
“We have been waiting so long for a taxi that my husband had to go to find one,” said Evelana Kanigowska, who was visiting from Vancouver.
“This has been a really frustrating experience,” she said as she was sitting on her suitcases.
Dawn Straf, of Saskatchewan, in town for a Canadian Paraplegic Association meeting, said it was one of the worst trips of her life and she’s not coming back to Hogtown.
“About 15 people in our group were promised wheelchair accessible rooms which they didn’t get,” she said.
“All the rooms were promised out to police officers,” Straf said.
Her handicapped members weren’t able to enjoy the city because they couldn’t get past the security fencing, she said.
“We spent all our time sitting in taxis because of the traffic congestion,” Straf said. “It has been a terrible experience for members of our group.”
She said downtown resembled an “armed camp” and couldn’t wait to get out of the city. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE
